Why Bad Things Happen to Positive People

Posted on: September 27th, 2009 by Lori Deschene - 20 Comments

rose-colored-glassesI was 24 years old. Young enough to think just moving to New York was enough to make my dreams come true. Old enough to know that’s not quite the way it works.

I’d spent my first 18 years clawing my way to the top of everything that interested me, and the next 6 slowly learning the art of failure and humility. At 24 I knew I had to become someone important, but I was desperate to find the elevator to success. I didn’t think I had the energy to make up it up the stairs.

When I arrived at my interview for marketing job—as it was so descriptively advertised on Craigslist—I was shocked to see 25 other eager faces, all waiting in the same room. The whiteboard read, Who wants to work smarter, not harder and earn six figures?

Sign me up, I thought. This looked promising.

A 22-year old Hispanic girl named Wakia led us through a 45-minute presentation. She never once asked for the resume I carried in my second-hand briefcase. She didn’t ask a single person for their name. Instead she exuded an infectious energy and explained how she recently bought her own home while helping other people do the same.

If you were born yesterday—as I clearly had been—please forgive me for spoiling the surprise ending to this story. She hadn’t bought a house. She didn’t make six figures. And no one else did, either.

Of course I didn’t see that then. I hadn’t yet honed my whole “seeing good” philosophy.

10 Reasons It’s Awesome the Economy Sucks

Posted on: February 22nd, 2009 by Lori Deschene - 66 Comments

OK, I don’t really think it’s awesome that the economy sucks. I’d prefer all my friends and I have jobs—or even better, an ever-growing money tree. But that’s just not reality. Instead we’re faced with two choices: a.) Worry, complain, and go prematurely grey or b.) See reality from a different angle and benefit from this experience. Not sure how to change your perception? Allow me to offer some suggestions.

It’s awesome the economy sucks because:

10. You’ll become more resourceful. I’ve always preferred a barter system to the actual exchange of money (mostly because I like to roll around in dollar bills and I can’t do that if I give them all away.) Here’s an example: the day I lost my job, I arranged to do laundry at my yoga studio in exchange for free classes. You got skills—use them. You never know where you could save a little cash.

9. You can redefine success. Most people file this type of thinking right next to, “My mom thinks I’m special” and “Money can’t buy love.” But really, if you lose your job or take a pay cut, count all your other successes. You have friends and family who love you. You’re awesome at poker. You make a mean bratwurst—whatever! Anything you do well other than earn and buy stuff, appreciate that right now.

8. You have an opportunity to minimize. Buying, having, and maintaining a wide selection of stuff consumes a lot of energy. A bad economy is the perfect opportunity to rethink what you really need. (more…)
